The Engineering Exhibition organized by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa, will be held on 9th, 10th and 11th of September 2010 at the University of Moratuwa premises. This will be open for the general public daily from 09.00am to 07.00pm.

An Odyssey Well Fared…

Thus, we approach the end of the third and final day of the Extreme Odyssey. The final conclusion drawn about the Exhibition would have to be that it was a success beyond the wildest anticipations. The crowd overflowed by hundreds of thousands. The journey that was initiated with the intention to demonstrate the technological and scientific knowledge, and their applications in Engineering to the whole society, was surely amazing from the launch to the end. As we expected, the youth of Sri Lanka, showed an aroused interest in technological advances of the University of Moratuwa, and we feel that we have been able to provide conceptual and practical knowledge in such a way that they will not be disappointed. Not only them, but also, it is safe to say that the whole community relating to such technical fields took part in this event and harnessed the knowledge that we were more than willing to give away. Specifically, school children who attended the exhibition left the university premises bearing in their hearts to become an engineer and serve our society, and perhaps, the whole world by its many disciplines.
One of the students’ replies to the question as to what she thought of Engineering after seeing the exhibition was “I had no idea that engineering was so vast a discipline. I was under the impression that engineering was basically about buildings and stuff, but now I see that there are many interesting fields of engineering that are less known in the community that we owe, as these things make our lives easier without us even realizing it.”
The fame that the University of Moratuwa holds in this country is kept inviolate, at the end of this endeavor. In fact, it is likely that this was one of the best events held and organized by a university, in such a magnificent scale. This further more supports the renowned claim that The Faculty of Engineering in University of Moratuwa is undoubtedly the best in the country. And in the end, those who did not have a clear image of the University left with an impression that this is the best university of the country, and those who already had such an image, left with more solid proof to support that claim. This further solidified the impression we have among the students from other universities in the country, thereby strengthening our inter-university relationships and exchange of knowledge. And as we all know, all the students of the university worked as one to make this dream come true, so without a doubt, this is the major event that strengthened the unity among the students more than any event seen before, without any regard of seniority or any other sort of divide.
As mentioned before, a special gratitude must be attributed toward the academic and non-academic staffs of the university, the students’ union of the Engineering Faculty, and last but not least, to all the students, undergraduates and post graduates alike, for making this event a success, and for all the toil and sweat they have spent with that goal in mind.

The Journey Continues

Third day to the extreme odyssey, and the crowds continue to flow in through the gates without any decrease. An aroused interest seems to be ever increasing in the community. The University premises are overflowing with crowd by the minute. It is estimated that more than twice the crowd of the second day, will come before noon to partake in this gallant venture. Students from all around the country seem to have come despite the fact that today is a school holiday. It is safe to assume that the word spread wide through those who came to see the exhibition in the first two days, to attract such an enormous crowd.

In the previous day, the vending stall owners were asked to keep their stalls open for longer than the estimated duration as the crowd unexpectedly exceeded the anticipated numbers. This in turn proves that Sri Lanka is stepping into a new era, in which, the knowledge of technology and science is no longer limited to a select set of individuals, but is now accessible for the general public, with the leading institutes such as the University of Moratuwa as the pioneers guiding the country through out this journey.
The main reason for this widespread interest can be presumed to be the fact that ExMo, is not merely an Exhibition of theoretical scientific concepts, but also an event full of things that are much closer to our day to day lives.

Such as in the above picture; this displays the history of Textile and Clothing industry in Sri Lanka… A quite familiar subject to us all and yet, often do we neglect the importance and significance of these vital things that we take for granted.
And of course, things that are vital for the industrial and economic growth of Sri Lanka; especially in the fields of Earth Resource, Electronic and Telecommunication, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering fields. The items/concepts put in display unravel the potential of the Sri Lankan youth in the aforementioned fields; in their applications and the practicality. Uncanny innovations from the students show promise in making Sri Lanka the catalyst in a paradigm shift that may lead the world to a brighter, greener , sustainable, self-sufficient and better future.
The new concepts of Energy efficient lighting/electrical appliances et cetera were put in display in the Electrical Engineering Department. And The basic concepts of Gyroscopic sensor/feedback loops were demonstrated in the Mechanical Engineering Department, there by demonstrating the potential of our youth in up coming fields such as robotics and industrial automation which are bound to play a vital role in the near future developments of our country.

A student explaining the basic concept of an inverted pendulum at the entrance of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Students demonstrating the sophisticated technology behind the often seen things such as Textile and Clothing, which plays a great role in the national income of Sri Lanka.

The mining and drilling equipment used in the Bolgoda graphite mines. A national heritage in deed, being one of the largest and well-known graphite reserves in the entire world, now being efficiently extracted using advances in mechanical Engineering.
